It looks like EFFEN Vodka, a brand that 50 Cent promotes heavily, is distancing themselves from the rapper following the backlash of a video he posted making fun of an airport worker who turns out to be autistic.
“EFFEN is a brand that considers social responsibility the highest of priorities, and 50 Cent’s recent actions are in no way representative of EFFEN® Vodka or our brand values,” said the company in a statement (via AllHipHop.com). “We are taking this situation extremely seriously and have communicated our profound disappointment to 50 Cent directly.”
Fif has since apologized to the 19-year-old man who has been identified as Andrew Ferrell. According to Page Six, Ferrell’s family has reportedly accepted the apology and has no plans to further pursue legal action.
“While the incident at the airport resulted from an unfortunate misunderstanding, I am truly sorry for offending the young man,” said 50 Cent in a statement. “It was certainly not my intent to insult him or the disability community, which is a source of great strength in America. I have apologized personally to him and his family.”
Meanwhile, 50 has donated $100,000 to Autism Speaks in response to the backlash.
“I want to turn this misunderstanding into an understanding. There are people that are ignored, mistreated and neglected with disabilities that need our support,” he said referring to his insulting video.
Hopefully, 50’s monetary gesture will smooth things over with not only Ferrell’s family but the public at large who are still outraged by his video.
