Skepta put on a hell of a (sold out) show at Camden’s KOKO last night, almost as if you were at a “Skeptamo Dance,” as photographer Ashley Verse put it—which is a play-on-words for legendary grime rave Eskimo Dance. The last time the emcee was at the London venue was alongside Kanye West for his surprise set, following that performance at The Brits, but this was Joseph Adenuga’s time to shine like the lyrical don that he is. Stormzy’s official DJ, DJ Tiny opened up shop with certified club killers, spinning everything from Tempa T’s “Next Hype” to SLK’s “Hype Hype”, before Frisco took the stage to perform a few tracks from his System Killer LP (“Them Man There” got a double reload). At around 9.30pm, Skepta entered his domain and brought with him Jme, Jammer, Novelist, Shorty and Wiley—as well as an impromptu, middle-of-the-show performance from Solo 45 with “Feed Em To The Lions”, and Giggs, who linked Jme for “Man Don’t Care”—to run through Konnichiwa, the best album of his career. With every other passing face rocking a Konnichiwa tee, there was no mistaking whose ceremony you were at. Here’s what went down in pictures, all of which were taken by Sabb Adams.
