Artists We Lost in 2016

Artists We Lost in 2016 news

While 2016 has brought us a great deal of music and entertainment, it also brought us sadness as we lost some major music figures in the R&B, hip-hop, pop, soul, rock and blues worlds.

Several artists have bid farewell to us in 2016. Among them, veteran songbird Natalie Cole  an “Unforgettable” artist who touched so many people with her angelic voice. Also, Nicholas Caldwell, of the R&B quintet The Whispers, passed away in early January. The crooner, who is famously known for his gorgeous beard, was a proud member of the group who garnered chart-topping hits in the 1980s. Blues legend Otis Clay also left this earth as well. The Chicago native was a gifted songwriter and was beloved by many in the blues community.

In hip-hop, we lost two prominent figures — Clarence “Blowfly” Reid and Big Kap. Blowfly is often credited as the first gangsta rapper who influenced Snoop Dogg and DJ Quick with his brand of X-rated parody albums. Meanwhile, Big Kap was an influential DJ in New York who helped usher the late Notorious B.I.G. to rap prominence.

One death that shook up the world, was the passing of rock icon David Bowie. The British singer has influenced artists in all genres of music during his 50-year career. He will undoubtedly be missed by both musicians and fans alike. Another rocker, Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, also passed away, which saddened many fans of both that long-running California band and his solo 80s hits.

Finally, we lost Maurice White, the co-founder of the legendary soul/funk group Earth, Wind & Fire. During his illustrious career in music, White help delivered Africana, self-pride and soulful music to the masses.

In honor of these incredible musicians, we pay homage to each of them in the photo gallery above. So without further ado, peep our list of Artists We Lost in 2016.
