Blood Orange Details New LP ‘Freetown Sound’ for 'The Underappreciated' news

Dev Hynes announced that Freetown Sound, his latest album as Blood Orange, will arrive on July 1st. The 17-track set, which Hynes wrote and produced himself, is currently titled according to its place in the sequence (“Track 1,” “Track 2,” etc.)

In a press release, Hynes described the inspiration behind the record: “I have just finished making an album about my life, my upbringing, being black in England, being black in America … my movement to this country at the age of 21, the same age that my mother moved from Guyana to London, and my father from Sierra Leone to London. Freetown Sound, the name of my album, is taken from Freetown where my father was born.”

“My album is for everyone told they’re not BLACK enough, too BLACK, too QUEER, not QUEER the right way, the underappreciated,” he added in a picture of a handwritten note posted on Instagram. “It’s a CLAPBACK.” The photo also contains Prince’s famous Love symbol.

Hynes also shared a minute-long teaser for Freetown Sound on Instagram. The clip includes shots of the artist practicing dance moves in a studio along with a brief excerpt of an interview with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates – noting “all of us, you know, have our ways of coping” – as well as pictures of De La Soul, Debbie Harry and more.

The last Blood Orange album, Cupid Deluxe, came out in November of 2013. Since then, Hynes has appeared as a vocalist, producer, or songwriter on albums by Carly Rae Jepsen, Heems, and Le1f.
