Cassadee Pope on 'Complicated' New EP: The Ram Report news

It’s been less than three years since Cassadee Pope released her debut solo album, Frame by Frame. Still, when it came time for a follow up project, she felt the need “to reintroduce myself,” she tells Rolling Stone Country. And she’s done just that with four very different songs.

Summer, Pope’s EP released last week, shows her romantic (yet sensible) side with its sexy title track, her vulnerable side with the soaring “Piano,” her sentimental side with the gorgeous “Kisses at Airports” and all of the many facets of her homecoming queen-turned-tattooed-rock-star personality with the clever “Alien.”

“With Frame by Frame, the songs were just my favorite of the bunch. I was just writing whatever came to my head,” Pope recalls. “Now, I feel like I have a bit more of a focused plan for my lyrics and what I want to say, and that’s to empower people and show a little bit more of a complicated side of myself. I’m vulnerable but I’m also very confident and empowering. And I think these songs just really rounded out perfectly.”

The EP’s title track is The Voice winner’s first solo single in two years, though she just recently topped the charts with Chris Young on their duet, “Think of You.” Co-written with Kelly Archer and Emily Shackelton, “Summer” is all about a romance that fades with her tan lines.

“The thing that I love about this song is that we didn’t create a conflict when we were writing it,” she explains. “This isn’t about a cheater or him doing something wrong or leaving without any say. It’s just a summer romance that has to end at some point.”

Pope is currently on tour with Young, making a detour back to her adopted hometown of Nashville tonight to sing on the CMT Awards alongside Pitbull and Leona Lewis, in one of the show’s most anticipated performances.
