Corrine Bailey Rae has been touring in support of her first album in six years, The Heart Speaks in Whispers, and most recently stopped by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert to share her brand of soothing, eclectic soul with listeners.

The project is her first since 2010’s The Sea, and Rae collaborated with her new husband, Steve Brown for the soothing, genre-bending record. Grammy-nominated group KING also lended a hand to the record, producing the lead single, “Been to the Moon,” while jazz bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding shows up on the album.

Rae told Billboard that she found a musical haven of sorts when she recorded the album in Los Angeles, where she fell in love with the black alternative scene. That’s partly why she was so excited to work with KING, whose signature sound is apparent on the record.

“Thundercat, J Davey, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington—all the people who circle around Kendrick Lamar…I felt like I was in heaven,” she said of recording the album in L.A.

Currently, Rae is on tour tour now through Oct. 7, where she’ll be joined by Andra Day on some dates and Alabama Shakes on others. Watch the Tiny Desk concert below.
