David Bowie's Art Collection Set for Exhibition, Auction news

David Bowie‘s private art collection will be put on display around the world before heading to auction at Sotheby’s in London in November, Reuters reports.

The “Bowie/Collector” three-part sale will feature approximately 400 items from the late musician’s collection, which, in all, is expected to sell for over $13 million.

A selection of pieces set to be auctioned off is available to peruse on the Sotheby’s website, while the full catalog is available to pre-order. Bowie’s collection features works from contemporary luminaries such as Damien Hirst, Frank Auerbach, Henry Moore and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as sculptures, design furniture and a peculiar Sixties record player designed by Italian brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

While art, like fashion and theater, has long been an inextricable part of Bowie’s music and aura, Sotheby’s noted that the musician’s art collector side “was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view.”

Sotheby’s Europe chairman, Oliver Barker, added that Bowie’s collection was “eclectic, unscripted, understated” and “offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th century’s greatest creative spirits.”

Highlights from Bowie’s collection will be exhibited at Sotheby’s in London, July 20th through August 9th, before being shown in Los Angeles, September 20th and 21st, New York, September 26th through 29th and Hong Kong, October 12th through 15th. The actual auction will take place in London November 10th and 11th.
