Every year XXL Magazine throws a huge party for it’s annual Freshman cover celebrating hip-hop’s new wave. This year was no different, as Desiigner headlined the show with support from some major heavy hitters.
Known for his hit “Panda,” Brooklyn’s own Desiigner took the stage at PlayStation Theater in the heart of Time Square an hour late but his energy was worth the wait. Even though he barely rapped to his tracks playing in the background, his stage presence was a sight to see and he dove into the crowd more times than we could keep track of during his short set. With a puddle of water and sweat onstage the night of course ended with the notable track ‘Panda’ which gave the already hype crowd a brand new energy.
Satirical rapper Lil Dicky may be an acquired taste but his relatability and humor onstage was entertaining as he took the stage beforehand. He doesn’t rap about bling and expensive cars but instead he raps about spreadsheets and saving money. If you get the humor then you’ll enjoy his performance, one fan surely did as he invited a young woman onstage to “entertain” her and did he ever. Lil Dicky stripped down to his black and white striped boxer briefs and gave her a lap dance…and flowers.
Everyone chanted “Yachty!” early on and when Lil Yachty finally came out the crowd exploded. He got so much love and energy from fans that he performed his notable track “Minnesota” twice! G Herbo performed for the enthusiastic crowd who had respect for the Chi-town artist especially after he told his story to New York through a heavy freestyle part of his set. Harlem rapper Dave East performed and repped his Coast hard with his track “No Coachella For Me.” Up and coming hip hop artist Denzel Curry wow’d the crowd at the beginning of the night, at only 21-years-old he delivered a headlining set and performed some tunes from his latest album Imperial which features Joey Bada$$ and Rick Ross.
