Veteran rapper/producer DJ Quik dropped a new song, “Black Friday,” which addresses the wave of police killings that have rocked the nation.

Quik says he was compelled to write the song because he’s sick of what he’s been seeing as of late.

“I wrote this piece because I don’t like the tumultuous air surrounding Black People,” he wrote. “Someone had to speak up for the African American community… and I elect Me to do so.”

Over a mellow track, the Compton, Calif. native raps about about everything from the “good vs. bad hair” debate and says if Pac was here, “he’d write a song that would calm it down, I would maybe produce it, give it that Compton sound.” He joins fellow rappers including T.I., Jay Z, Common, Ty Dolla $ign, Killer Mike, Big K.R.I.T. and more who have made records addressing police terrorism in the black community.

Beyond addressing pertinent social issues, earlier this year, Quik released the standout 6-track EP with Problem, Rosecrans. Check out Quik’s “Black Friday” below.
