According to Vulture, last Tuesday’s series premiere drew 1.8 million total viewers and 1.2 million telecast viewers in the network’s target demo of adults under 50. That means that Atlanta, executive produced by and starring Glover, had the best premiere tune-in for any basic comedy cable since Inside Amy Schumer debuted in 2013.
Obviously, that’s a big deal for a lot of reasons, the primary one being that the show’s nuanced, complex portrayal of black life is one that’s pretty much never been seen on television. The fact that the show is doing so well means more Hollywood dollars could potentially be invested in telling more black stories, which is of course, a win for everyone interested in seeing even more diversity on the screen.
Additionally, Vulture reports that Atlanta also stands as the biggest comedy debut for any FX or FXX half-hour since 2011’s Wilfred, including last winter’s Baskets (1.75 million total viewers and 1.05 million adults under 50).
The show’s success isn’t that surprising, as it’s been repeatedly hailed by critics as the best new series on television, and with due cause. Atlanta airs on FX on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST.
