Members of Earth, Wind & Fire were on hand to present Record of the Year at the 2016 Grammy Awards on Monday night (Feb. 15). They also took a moment to remember their recently-departed musical leader Maurice White.
Surviving EWF members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson appeared onstage and paid tribute to White.
“My brother Maurice White created Earth, Wind & Fire out of the clay of his soul said Verdine. “His vision of love, compassion and unity has been heard around the world.”
“Tonight we celebrate music in honor of my friend, a teacher, a preacher and my big brother Maurice White,” added Bailey. “Maurice White we love you.”
Prior to their appearance E,W & F founder Maurice White was remembered with a thoughtful tribute from Stevie Wonder and Pentatonix who performed an acoustic rendition of “That’s the Way of the World.”
By the way, Earth, Wind & Fire are also Lifetime Achievement Award honorees along with Run-DMC, Celia Cruz, Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane, Linda Ronstadt and Ruth Brown.
Pop superstar Taylor Swift would win the coveted Album of the Year trophy for 1989. At the podium, the “Bad Blood” singer had some stinging remarks aimed at Kanye West who made some disparaging remarks about her on his latest album, The Life of Pablo.
Fans on social media were also upset that Kendrick Lamar didn’t get the Album of the Year honor for To Pimp a Butterfly. Some felt that although K.Dot won for Best Rap Album and performed on the show, that was all the Grammy producers was going to give him. Other felt that the Compton rhymer was robbed.
