Call it the effects of Frank Ocean-mania. With all the buzz and anticipation related to the rumor that the reclusive singer might finally release his sophomore album Boys Don’t Cry last week, many Ocean fans decided to revisit his last record Channel Orange en masse—a lot of fans. Enough people listened to the album that they inadvertently propelled it back into the Billboard 200 for the first time in three years.
According to Billboard, Channel Orange received a 40 percent uptick in listeners from the week before and sold 5,000 equivalent album units. As it turns out, that figure was just enough to move the album into the charts at the No. 146 overall. The last time Channel Orange logged an appearance in the Billboard 200 was on May 18, 2013. In addition, Ocean’s logged a massive amount of on-demand audio and video streams in the week ending Aug. 4 rising to 7 million total.
Of course, all of this is little solace to those fans that wanted to help propel Ocean’s hotly anticipated next album Boys Don’t Cry near the top of the charts. It all started early last week when the New York Times reported that Ocean was finally set to release his long-gestating work that Friday. The internet went into a frenzy and was driven even more wild when the day came and Ocean’s website flickered to live to show the singer building something out of wood. Bob Vila thought it was a speaker.
As it turned out, Ocean fans were left disappointed once again. The album never dropped, and the wait continues on and on and on.
