Freddie Gibbs and Madlib are back at it again. Last night, during his Red Bull Music Academy talk in New York City, Madlib revealed that he and Gibbs were already hard at work on a new album titled Bandana. The news comes as a welcome surprise to fans who had been wondering if the duo might ever link up again following the success of their last collaboration album Piñata, which debuted in 2014.
Making things even more interesting, reports Pitchfork, Madlib revealed in the chat that many of the tracks that will make up the eventual album were at one time up for consideration by Kanye West for inclusion on his most recent work, The Life of Pablo. While West eventually ended up using one of the producer’s tracks to create his single “No More Parties in L.A.,” there was still a plethora of material left in storage. “We just wanna thank Madlib for these 6 beat CDs he sent over,” West tweeted while in the midst of recording.

Gibbs eventually had his own crack at his collaborator’s “No More Parties in L.A.” beat a short while after that song dropped, which he flipped into “Cocaine Parties in L.A.” Having already worked on Piñata and four EPs together before now—Thuggin’, Shame, Deeper, and Knicks (Remix)—Gibbs and Madlib have well-established rapport.
It will be very interesting to hear what they cook up in the lab for this go-around.
