Hear Moby's New Serene Album 'Long Ambients1: Calm. Sleep.' news

Moby has released a free album, which was intentionally penned to lull listeners to sleep and for other relaxing activities. Long Ambients1: Calm. Sleep. is available as a free download and it’s also streaming on a variety of services, including Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal.

“Over the last couple of years I’ve been making really, really, really quiet music to listen to when I do yoga or sleep or meditate or panic,” Moby said, describing the album on his website. “I ended up with four hours of music and have decided to give it away.”

There are 11 compositions in the set. “It’s really quiet: no drums, no vocals, just very slow, calm, pretty chords and sounds and things for sleeping and yoga, etc.,” he explained.

True to his description, the ambient, calming tracks – the majority of which clock in at more than 20 minutes – are serene. Hear them below or download the album via WeTransfer.

The artist’s passion for ambient sounds has a long lineage, including his material on 1993’s Ambient, and on his reissue of Hotel: Ambient in 2014, which repackaged instrumentals that were part of a bonus disc from 2005’s Hotel. He told Rolling Stone that the B-Side of David Bowie’s “Heroes” was his first experience with the medium. “As much as I’ve loved writing songs and dance tracks I’ve always been obsessed with the ways in which ambient and instrumental music can transform the space in which they’re being listened,” he said.

Moby recently released Porcelain: A MemoirHis book focuses on the time period before his mega-selling 1999 album, Play, and traverses his rise from DJing New York clubs to producing his own singles and headlining raves.
