Hear Yasiin Bey's Brooding, Silky 'Local Time' news

Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, sings amidst dissonant electronics on new track “Local Time.” “Wherever you are, the local time is now,” Bey sings atop horror movie whistling and a droning bass line.

“Local Time,” like May’s synth-heavy “N.A.W.,” is credited to Dec 99th. Both tracks appeared on the A Country Called Earth Soundcloud page, where Bey posted a message Thursday postponing multiple Scandinavian concerts, presumably due to ongoing passport issues.

Bey’s recent flurry of new music follows his January arrest in South Africa for allegedly violating local immigration laws, including the use of a fraudulent “world passport” while attempting to leave the country. Bey has reportedly lived in Cape Town, South Africa since May 2013.

Days after the arrest, in an audio recording posted on Kanye West’s website, Bey announced plans to retire from the music industry in 2016. “I am retiring from the music recording industry as it is currently assembled today, and also from Hollywood, effective immediately,” he said, according to Vibe. “I’m releasing my final album this year, and that’s that.”
