Joey Bada$$ is one of the most popular rappers to emerge out of Brooklyn in recent years, so it’s only right that the 21-year-old pay homage to The Notorious B.I.G. on the 19th anniversary of his untimely passing (March 9).

With his latest track “Brooklyn’s Own,” Bada$$ speaks about his skills and social ills over the smooth beat provided by Statik Selektah. “What if I told you there was nothing to be scared of / Nothing but yourself and all the lies they shared ya / Look at all the lives that we lost cause we fear love,” he rhymes.

He’s also gives a shout out to Marcy Projects (which housed Jay Z and Memphis Bleek) and serves up some references to Biggie. “Ain’t nothing worst than a Flatbush man when a gun in his hand Ready to die for rubber band filled with a couple grand,” he raps.

Afterwards the Brooklyn rhymer heads into the chorus which repeats Brooklyn a few times over a sample of Mary Janes’ “All Night Long.”

Bada$$ and his Pro Era crew are certainly holding it down for the Big Apple as his predecessors moved on to global ventures. And naturally, the position comes with controversy. The B4DA$$ rapper has been beefing with another Brooklyn rhymer from around his way — Troy Ave, who insulted Bada$$’ late friend, Capital STEEZ. In their latest spat, Bada$$ posted some warning shots on Instagram. “Karma will catch up to you but unfortunately, your album sales wont.” Ouch.
