Several artists like T.I. and Chris Brown have voiced their support of Colin Kaepernick’s decision not to stand while the National Anthem is playing. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s controversial stance has sparked mixed reactions online with some calling it unpatriotic, while others understanding Kaepernick’s silent protest.

On Tuesday (Aug. 30), John Legend went on his Twitter account to show his support for Kaepernick’s decision not to stand during the national anthem. The R&B piano man called the “Star Spangled Banner” a “weak song” and also referenced lyrics in the third verse.

“For those defending the current anthem, do you really truly love that song? I don’t and I’m very good at singing it. Like, one of the best,” he tweeted. “My vote is for America the Beautiful. Star spangled banner is a weak song anyway.

“And then you read this,” he added, linking to a story on The Intercept about the anthem’s rarely-sung third verse.

“No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave / And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave / O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

When a follower questioned Legend’s argument over the song’s lyrics, Legend responded, “I agree that [Kaepernick’s] protest wasn’t about the lyrics. It’s about the lives of people of color in America.”
