So, why is it that radio isn’t playing Frank Ocean? It’s not exactly news that corporate radio has some serious diversity issues and problems with breaking new music but Frank Ocean is poised to hit No. 1 on Billboard this week, so why is it that radio isn’t relentlessly pushing any music from his already critically-acclaimed album, Blonde?

Kanye West went on Twitter yesterday (Aug. 23) to ask that very question in a series of tweets.

“If anyone at radio really loves music … Come together and pick your favorite Frank Ocean song and play it at least 10 times a day,” he urged, calling out major stations including iHeart and Clear Channel.

He added the obvious—Frank’s release is easily the biggest thing in music right now, everyone is listening to it, so what gives?

“Me and Drake both listen to Frank. Radio has to support amazing artists,” he said.

He ended his petition by asking radio execs to examine themselves and their motives. Why are they even in the business at all if the music, and more specifically, getting the music to the people, isn’t the priority?

“Ask yourself Why did you love music in the first place and what can you do to add to the story,” he said. “Power to the people. Power to the artist. Empower the artist and create a more inspired world.”

Word Kanye. The push from ‘Ye is even more noteworthy because some people have argued that Blonde is the album that the Chicago rapper/producer was trying to make with The Life of Pablo, which generally received mixed reviews, despite it’s enormous popularity. Either way, it’s commendable when a gigantic artist makes a push for another artists– especially when the point is valid. Independent artists are in a position to revolutionize the industry, and Frank is in a unique, powerful position.

The question is—is radio paying attention?
