Drake wasn’t the only rapper getting a key. Fellow rhymer Kendrick Lamar was awarded with the key to the city of Compton at a special ceremony on Saturday (Feb. 13).

K.Dot has been repping his beloved hometown through his music and Compton Mayor Aja Brown, along with city council, wanted to honor him for his achievements. In front of hundreds of fans and supporters, Mayor Brown presented K.Dot with a huge plague in front of his mom and dad who were onstage.

“As long as I’m doing music; as long as I’m using my platform for something; I will always – since day one – scream Compton and make sure I come back to this community,” said Kendrick during his acceptance speech.

“Through all of the hardship, losing family members, losing homeboys for some reason we always still loved Compton because we always had faith,” he added. “So before I even wrote we gonna be alright, that’s what we’ve been singing since day one.”

“Please believe me it will not stop. This is just a spark of everything,” he finished.

Congratulations to Kendrick Lamar on his honorary key to the city of Compton.

Next is the Grammy Awards where Kendrick is up for a whopping 11 awards, including Album of the Year for To Pimp a Butterfly and Best Rap Performance for “Alright.”
