Kid Cudi posted a letter on Facebook yesterday evening (Oct. 4), saying that he’s checking into rehab.
The 32 year-old rapper admitted that he’s not at peace. “Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges. I haven’t been since you’ve known me,” he wrote, after saying that he felt “ashamed.”
He said that he needed to enter rehab for life preservation.
“If I didn’t come here, I would’ve done something to myself,” he wrote. “I simply am a damaged man swimming in a pool of emotions everyday of my life. There’s a [raging] violent storm inside of my heart at all times. [I don’t know] what peace feels like.”
He went on to say that anxiety and depression “have ruled my life for as long as I can remember” and that he doesn’t leave the house because of it, nor can he make friends or trust people.
Cudi has his anticipated album due out this month, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’, which features an impressive roster, including Andre 3000, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, and Willow Smith. Cudi says that although he won’t be around to promote much, his Republic label and his manager will let fans know about his upcoming releases, including videos and release dates.
“The album is still on the way, I promise,” he said, adding that he squared away all of his business before he checked himself into rehab. “Love and light to everyone who has love for me and I am sorry if I let anyone down. I really am sorry. Ill be back, stronger, better. Reborn. I feel like shit, I feel so ashamed.”
Of course, American society has a long way to go in terms of the way that we view mental health issues, including depression, and Cudi’s heartbreaking apology and “shame” for dealing with real issues is simply indicative of how much more work must be done in these areas.
The well wishes for Cudi have been pouring in since his announcement. Take a look at Cudi’s post and the outpouring of love he’s gotten from fans below.
