The reunited LCD Soundsystem headlined the Friday night festivities at Coachella with a dazzling set that included a surprise cover of David Bowie‘s “Heroes.” The spirited take on the Bowie classic served as LCD Soundsystem’s penultimate song before closing out their first of two Coachella performances with their anthem “All My Friends.

“Heroes” served as a fitting tribute from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy to one of his personal musical heroes, as the singer/producer worked with Bowie on the Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor,” crafted a remix of Bowie’s own The Next Day cut “Love Is Lost” and laid down percussion on a pair of  tracks.

“As a little kid, ‘Heroes’ was one of my favorite songs, and as a bearded hipster, Bowie/[Brian] Eno collabs in Berlin are, you know, ‘check’ as cool stuff to listen to that you like,” Murphy told The AV Squad in 2010 following the release of the Berlin Trilogy-inspired This Is Happening; the LP’s “All I Want” is especially indebted to Bowie and Robert Fripp’s work on “Heroes.” “That Bowie/Eno sound, it’s just a big part of my musical life, from when I was a kid through now. It’s one of those through-lines.”

Prior to “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down,” LCD Soundsystem hinted at Coachella’s Saturday night headliner, Guns N’ Roses, by performing a snippet of that band’s epic “November Rain.”

LCD Soundsystem return to the Indio, California stage on April 22nd for the second of the Coachella festival’s two weekends.
