LCD Soundsystem, Mavis Staples, and Joey Bada$$ Paid Tribute to Prince at Coachella news

The second weekend of Coachella kicked off yesterday and as expected, many of the artists on the bill took time out of their set to pay homage to Prince who unexpectedly passed away just the day before. Before headliners LCD Soundsystem even took the stage, the festival aired Prince’s performance of the Radiohead song “Creep” from his own turn in the desert in 2008. Around the grounds, the typically multi-colored palm trees glowed a constant purple as the quote, “From now on This is Prince’s House,” flashed onto the gigantic screen.

When they finally did hit the stage, James Murphy and his band paid homage to Prince by performing the singer’s 1981 song “Controversy.”

Elsewhere earlier in the day, Joey Bada$$ began his set with a touching tribute to “The Purple One” and played a bit of the song “1999.”

Legendary soul singer Mavis Staples, who was signed to Paisley Park Records for seven years, also paused to remember Prince, calling him “My angel,” before talking about their first encounter. “The first time I met Prince, he came to the Shrine Auditorium — my family was having a concert… [My sisters] were saying, ‘He’s so cool! He’s so cute! He’s so good-looking!’ I say, ‘I’m gonna play it cool.’ He came up, and I [screamed] uncontrollably.”
