Lena Dunham Says Kanye’s “Famous” Video Makes Her Feel “Unsafe” news

On Monday, Girls creator and star Lena Dunham shared her thoughts about Kanye West’s new “Famous” video in a Facebook post, calling the clip “one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory” and saying that it made her feel “sad and unsafe.”

Dunham pointed out that she was far from a novice when it came to art featuring nudity. Both of her parents are artists, and she reminded readers that her mom, “ironically enough, has photographed some butt naked life-sized dolls of her own.” But West’s video, which features the naked bodies of twelve famous people, was very different, she said, especially given today’s political climate.

“[A]t the same time Brock Turner is getting off with a light tap for raping an unconscious woman and photographing her breasts for a group chat… Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they’ve been drugged and chucked aside at a rager?” she wrote. “It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease.”

The fact that Dunham’s close friend Taylor Swift (or a facsimile thereof) appears in the video was especially disturbing to Dunham.

“[S]eeing a woman I love like Taylor Swift (fuck that one hurt to look at, I couldn’t look), a woman I admire like Rihanna or Anna [Wintour], reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy in the Valley, it makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this and may not understand that grainy roving camera as the stuff of snuff films,” she continued.
