Mariah Carey to Be Honored at GLAAD Media Awards news

Mariah Carey is set to be honored for her support of LGBT rights at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York.

“Through her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “She is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward.”

The GLAAD award is presented to “a media figure who has consistently used their platform to support and advance LGBT equality and acceptance.” Lee Daniels, openly gay filmmaker, will present the award to the 46-year-old singer. This won’t be the first that the two collaborated — Daniels directed Carey in Precious and The Butler.

Carey will join a number of LGBT allies who’ve been honored at the GLAAD Awards including Janet Jackson, Cher, Russell Simmons, Elizabeth Taylor and Patti LaBelle.

The Laverne Cox-hosted award show will go down on May 14 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

In the meantime, the engaged beauty will be just coming off of her world Sweet Sweet Factory tour. She’s also slated to grace the Essence Festival stage in July as a headliner act alongside Kendrick Lamar and Maxwell. All while planning a wedding with billionaire fiance, James Packer.
