Phonte and Eric Roberson have joined forces to mellow out your summer with their release, Tigallerro. Tay and Erro have collaborated frequently over the years but the two finally decided to go ahead and make their musical union official with a proper album. As expected, it jams.
Phonte, who is also one-half of Grammy-nominated soul group Foreign Exchange, and is of the acclaimed former hip-hop group Little Brother, flexes his superior songwriting skills throughout the mid-tempo release, which features solid production from Nicolay, Sam Champ, Rich Median among others. And Erro, who has longtime been a force on the indie soul scene, further showcases his superior vocal ability on tracks like the lead single, “It’s So Easy” and “Thru the Night.”
The offering is mellow and down-to-earth, as expected. “She look good in a dress but better with just my t-shirt on” Erro sings on “My Kinda Lady” before giving his woman props for being able to quote De La Soul. The pair expectedly gets comical on the trap-soul-ish “Hold Tight” where they sing-rap with precision, while never losing the overall vibe of the album. “Go on and be a family man,” Tigallo urges at the end of the song. “You ain’t missin’ nothin’ out here in these streets. Go to bed, Joe.”
For hip-hop heads who are always eager for Tay to spit, no worries. There are verses scattered throughout the record, enough to hopefully hold fans over until his next solo project, No News Is Good News, releases later this year. Phonte has also shown up on several features this year, on everyone from Kaytranada’s standout experimental soul offering 99.9% and Robert Glasper’s latest stellar release Everything Is Beautiful.
Tigallerro is available on iTunes now. Listen to “It Ain’t Easy” below.
