Hundreds of Prince fans gathered at Minneapolis’ historic venue First Avenue to celebrate The Purple One’s life and music on Thursday night (April 22).

First Avenue is no random choice — it has historic value. It’s where Prince filmed his 1984 classic movie, Purple Rain. It’s also where Prince also performed and perfected his stage presence.

Fans showed up to party like it’s 1999 and celebrate the late music icon who passed away on earlier that day. The crowd sang such Prince classics like “Little Red Corvette,” “Kiss,” “Delirious” and “Let’s Go Crazy” while laughing, dancing and crying. But while there was an impromptu block party on the outside of the venue — there was also a tribute going on inside First Avenue.

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor was the original main act for Thursday night — but it’s nearly impossible not to pay a tribute to Prince after hearing that the 57-year-old guitarist died. According to Billboard, Slipknot’s Taylor opened the show with “Purple Rain” to a crowd that was more-than-willing to sing along word-for-word.

“Even if you’re not a Prince fan, he’s part of the culture here. Everyone’s a fan tonight,” said a concertgoer.

Many celebrities, including Frank Ocean and Miguel, have been sharing their thoughts and memories of Prince since the tragic news broke yesterday.
