Ryan Adams is going back to the beginning.

The mercurial and prolific singer-songwriter is reissuing his landmark 2000 debut Heartbreaker as a deluxe box set.

The album, Adams’ first as a solo artist following his departure from the acclaimed alt-country band Whiskeytown, was immediately dubbed an instant classic. Recorded in two weeks in Nashville, Heartbreaker is brutal, beautiful, elegant and served as a launch pad for what has turned into a career full of musical twists and turns from hard rock to jam band excursions, to a full album interpretation of Taylor Swift’s 1989. Heartbreaker also proved Adams had amassed some talented admirers, as Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Kim Richey, Pat Sansone of Wilco, and producer Ethan Johns all contributed to the album.

Johns pens the booklet that accompanies the new set, which is due May 6th. The extensive reissue will include four 180 gram LPs — the original remastered album as well as demos and unreleased outtakes from the album sessions — and will also be released on CD. A DVD is also part of the package, featuring a complete, previously unreleased solo acoustic show from New York’s Mercury Lounge, at which Adams gave his first live performance of his meditative cover of Oasis’s “Wonderwall.”
