Simplicity is at the very heart of Drake White’s current single “Livin’ the Dream” — while it lyrically extolls enjoying being happy in the moment with a loved one, the composition revolves around one single descending chord progression that makes clever use of melody for variety’s sake.

“Some of the biggest hits in the world are the most simplistic songs,” the Alabama native tells Rolling Stone Country about the tune, which was written by Tom Douglas, Jaren Johnston and Luke Laird. “Because our human ears — we know what works.”

The video for “Livin’ the Dream” continues that theme of simplicity. Shot on a farm outside Nashville, the sepia-toned clip was directed by PR Brown and depicts White enjoying the pastoral settings with his wife Alex and their dog Writer. Much of the video is seen from the dog’s perspective, whether fetching something for one of the Whites or feeling the breeze in the bed of an old pickup truck.

For White, who previously released the single “It Feels Good” to country radio, breaking out has been a slow process but he’s not interested in getting ahead of himself. As in “Livin’ the Dream” and its video, he seems content to be right in the moment.

“Everybody has their own path,” he says. “Embrace your path and embrace where you are right now. I’d love to have an album out with three Grammys on the wall, of course, but when I get those three Grammys you know what? I’m gonna want another one. So I hold close to my family, to my wife, and that’s the important stuff.”
