Throughout the Seventies, rock guitarist Joe Walsh was a fixture in three separate bands with varying degrees of success: James Gang, Barnstorm and the Eagles. He then went on to launch a solo career with hits that included “Life’s Been Good.” Still, with its distinctive opening guitar riff, the Barnstorm-era tune “Rocky Mountain Way” is among Walsh’s most iconic creations, and a song that would be performed throughout tours with Barnstorm, the Eagles and beyond.

Walsh is currently on the road with another superstar act from the Seventies, Bad Company, and naturally “Rocky Mountain Way” is a highlight of their joint One Hell of a Night Tour. The churning rocker, which has been adopted by Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies and reworked in the Nineties for use in ABC’s Monday Night Football, has also influenced generations of aspiring guitarists. When the One Hell of a Night Tour hit Michigan’s DTE Energy Music Theatre last week, one of country music’s most accomplished players, Keith Urban, took the stage with Walsh to rock out “Rocky Mountain Way.”

But they didn’t go it alone: they were joined by another guitar legend, Waddy Wachtel, who is among the members of Walsh’s 10-piece touring outfit, and Ann Arbor native and The Voice finalist Laith Al-Saadi.

As the show marked the first visit to Michigan by a member of the Eagles since the January death of founding member Glenn Frey, Walsh dedicated his entire performance to “my brother and fellow bandmate.”

The guitar jam, witnessed by some 9,000 concertgoers, took place one night before Urban headlined his own show at the venue.
