In April, a pair of all-star concerts paid tribute to David Bowie‘s legacy, with artists like Michael Stipe, Debbie Harry, Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, Cyndi Lauper, Perry Farrell and Bowie’s longtime producer Tony Visconti participating in the Music of David Bowie events.

Those artists and more also contributed to “David Bowie Was The Gateway Drug For Your Favorite Rockstar,” a short film made by Okayplayer that was recorded backstage during the Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall concerts, with the artists involved all remembering the late rock legend and his impact on music.

The video also includes interviews with Laurie Anderson, Heart’s Ann Wilson, Cat Power, Esperanza Spalding, the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle, Ricki Lee Jones, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Bilal and Robyn Hitchcock, each of whom share an anecdote about what Bowie’s music means to them or why they selected the Bowie song they ultimately performed at the tribute concerts.

In the video, Ann Wilson reminisced about hearing “Space Oddity” for the first time on the radio. “I always say those are the songs that are the biggest, iconic hits, are the ones that really take you somewhere,” Wilson said. “A little kid or young kid could just dissolve into them and become Major Tom. And for a young woman, you could still be Major Tom.”

“To us, he was one of the first performance artists that I saw, and that’s what I always wanted to be, and that’s what I think it is a lot of modern performers are. But he laid the train tracks,” adds Lauper.
