While much of Sturgill Simpson’s chart-topping A Sailor’s Guide to Earth brings a positive spirit in the advice he’s dishing out to his son, there are still moments that register like warnings about the inevitability of heartbreak and random, senseless tragedy. The moody “Breakers Roar” is one such song, and its new Matt Mahurin-directed video adds to the overall feeling of unease.
Like Mahurin’s arresting work on the “Brace for Impact” and “In Bloom” videos before it, “Breakers Roar” is heavy on symbolic imagery. Initially, a surfer riding the waves is tossed from his board and dragged toward the bottom. “So enticing, deep dark seas / It’s so easy to drown in the dream,” Simpson sings, but on the way down it becomes clear this ocean is filled with every kind of pain and loss.
Simpson begins his world tour this evening (May 5th) with a sold-out two night stand at Austin City Limits Live. Additionally, he’s already sold-out the rest of his U.S. dates and will head to Europe for more shows in July.
