Hundreds of family and friends, as well as the hip-hop community, gathered to bid farewell to the late Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo at his funeral in Atlanta on Saturday (Oct. 1).

The rapper, whose real name is Carlos Walker, was a founding member of D4L and is best known for his anthemic hit, “Dey Know.” The 40-year-old artist died in a car accident on Sept. 22 after he was ejected from his vehicle during the crash.

The funeral services took place at the Jackson Memorial Baptist Church where Bishop Dreyfus C. Smith, senior Pastor of Wings of Faith Worldwide Ministries, delivered a powerful eulogy, according to

“The Shawty Lo that I really respect is not a ring tone,” he said about the late rapper. “It’s not the rap, it’s not the video, it’s not the dance. Shawty helped more people on the west side than most pastors and churches combined.”

When talking about Lo’s 11 children who are left to mourn their father, Smith said, “I know guys in this city that won’t take care of one child. He took care of y’all and some more.”

Among the guests in attendance included Waka Flocka Flame’s mom Debra Antney and reality star Benzino. “It’s really about taking nothing and turning it into something,” he told WSB-TV.

Fellow rapper Boosie Badazz made an appearance at the funeral via Skype. He told the mourners, “Way back…twelve years ago when we was on tour tour together, [Shawty Lo] always kept it real with me,” he said. “Bankhead, the streets, the world, lost a real one.”

After the ceremony, Shawty Lo’s casket was chauffeured by a horse and carriage through his native hometown of Bankhead.

“He wasn’t ashamed of who he was and where he came from. He always showed respect for Bankhead,” said Lo’s Manager Johnnie Cabbell.
