Slim of 112 returns with his first album in seven years, the appropriately-titled Refueled. Featuring a reinvigorated Slim and guest spots from Rich Homie Quan (on the hit single “Never Break Up”) and Slim’s former Bad Boy Records labelmate, Ma$e–and production from Patrick “Guitarboy” Hayes, (Keyshia Cole), Oddz & Endsz, Tim Kelly, Bridgetown and Kevin Rockhill.

With 112, Slim’s vocals became a mainstay of R&B hits during the 90s and early 2000s and his well-received solo debut, 2008s Love’s Crazy showed that he could evolve as a vocalist and as an artist. But he acknowledges that Refueled has been a long time coming.

“I wanted to make sure that when I came back with new music that I knew what it stood for,” he says. “And that I’d be happy to sing all the songs on the album and protect the legacy of 112 as well as make the fans happy.”

“The album is eclectic but classic. Everyone from age 8 to 80 can enjoy it. I stretched myself out and that reflects who I’ve been listening to, not just R&B and hip-hop but country, jazz and more pop. Where you see growth happening, it affects you. I listen to everything from Amigos to Adele to Rascal Flatts. I mean, Adele is pop but she’s very soulful. And The Weeknd two years ago was underground and now he’s mainstream..”

With the re-emergence of acts like Silk, Tweet and Johnny Gill and well-received albums from artists like Tank, 2016 is a year of resurgence for the kind of R&B fans of urban music enjoyed in the 1990s. And with Refueled, Slim is a part of that renaissance.

You can pre-order the album on iTunes here.
