Snoop Dogg was honored with the “I Am Hip-Hop” Award at the 2016 BET Hip-Hop Awards, and the West Coast Doggfather was given the tribute by Compton native Kendrick Lamar.

“Through his examples, we discovered our own transformative abilities to make a mark on our art,” Kendrick said in recognition of Snoop. “No other rappers can simultaneously give you records like ‘Murder Was The Case,’ and at the same time, make every beautiful woman, drop it like it’s hot. Snoop Dogg was the guy and he continue to be.”

A bevy of luminaries, including Dr. Dre, Y.G., Pharrell and Charlie Wilson, reflected on Snoop’s greatness in a video montage. In accepting the award, Snoop expressed his gratitude and shared that his greatness award has come from helping kids with his Snoop Youth Football League.

He also revealed that he’s happy to show love to younger hip-hop artists, as opposed to criticizing them. “I love how y’all are taking it across the world and unting people,” Snoop said. “Music is the universal language of all people and this is a way for us to come together.” “I’m just thankful to have been given the position to speak to people, to mentor people and to not become some old bitter rapper who’s made because the young emcees is happenin.’”
