A police officer in Columbus, Ohio fatally shot a 13 year-old teen that he was trying to detain following reports of an armed robbery, according to officials.

The boy was identified as Tyree King, NBC News reports. The Columbus Division of Police said in a statement that King “pulled a gun from his waistband” when officers attempted to take him and another male into custody Wednesday night. Police recovered a BB gun at the scene. The police officers involved were reportedly not wearing body cameras.

According to NBC News, after receiving reports about an armed robbery, “Officers followed the males to the alley … and attempted to take them into custody when one suspect pulled a gun from his waistband. One officer shot and struck the suspect multiple times.”

King, who was last enrolled in a STEM program as an eight grader, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:22 p.m. No one else was injured and the other male suspect was reportedly interviewed and later released pending further inquiries.

Area resident Chris Naderer told The Columbus Dispatch he heard a gate in his backyard get knocked down and then saw police chasing two young men in an alley outside of his home.

“Heard gun shots 5, 10 seconds afterwards,” Naderer also told NBC station WCMH. According to WCMH, the officer who fired the shots is a nine-year veteran of the force. He has not been named.

This incident comes two years after 12 year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed by police in Cleveland while playing with a BB gun in a local park, sparking nationwide protests.
