Brooklyn-based composer, visual artist and programmer Tristan Perich has been releasing works for 1-bit electronics for nearly a decade. Using the simplest possible electronic sounds, he creates musical suites out of ones and zeroes — an dizzying approach that feels like pocket calculators blipping their secret love songs.

His latest album, the rhythmic exploration Noise Patterns, comes as a circuit board that the listener plugs headphones directly into. With nothing mediating between the board and your speakers, it's as closes as you can get to his white noise and flickering pulses — a lowest-fi EDM exercise with phased rhythms like Steve Reich.

Perich let Rolling Stone inside his Brooklyn studio to see how he makes some of the most exciting physical music in the streaming era.
