Danny Brown‘s new video “When It Rain” has the rapper focusing on life struggles in his Detroit hometown: “Everybody hungry in them streets/ Nigga rob your grandma for something to eat/ Know it’s fucked up, that’s how it be/ Growing up living every day in the D.”
The song’s hook encourages movement as a form of escape: “When it rain, when it pour, get your ass on the floor. The edges of the video, directed by Mimi Cave, have a distorted quality, as if the footage was cobbled together from old VHS tapes.
Though Brown was formerly signed to the label Fool’s Gold, “When It Rain” is out on Warp Records. “With the blessing of my Fool’s Gold family by my side, I’m excited to be working with Warp on new material,” the rapper noted in a press release. “They’re music fans to the same high degree I am, and I’m looking forward to breaking some rules together.”
According to a post on Brown’s Instagram, he’s currently at work on a longer project. “Me and the bruh bruh @mixedbyali putting the final touches on my next masterpiece Bruisers,” the rapper wrote. “Get ready Stanny Crown season is approaching.” Brown’s last album Old came out in 2013.
