Guitarist Johnny Marr joined the Last Shadow Puppets onstage Sunday in Manchester for a dreamy cover of the Smiths‘ “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me,” a highlight from the band’s final LP, 1987’s Strangeways, Here We Come.
Fan footage finds the supplemented supergroup backed by a string quartet. Marr delivers a smoldering, arpeggiated guitar solo at the climax and frontman Alex Turner channels Morrissey’s hypnotic delivery while strutting around the stage in a blue suit.
Former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce wrote on Facebook that he was in the audience. “So I’m at The Last Shadow Puppets gig tonight and Johnny Marr walks on and they play, ‘Last Night I Dreamt…'” he wrote. “The guy next to me says, ‘Seen the guy on the right with black hair? That’s Johnny Marr, the guitarist from The Smiths and this is a Smiths song they’re playing.'”
