Since January 2013, Keith Urban has been sitting across the judges’ table from dozens of hopeful singers on American Idol, now in its 16th and final season. As the show winds down to next week’s three-night finale, which will see performances from both the first and last Idol champs (Kelly Clarkson and yet-to-be-determined winner), as well as one of the show’s most successful discoveries (Carrie Underwood), Urban got his last chance to step into the role of performer, unveiling the pulsating new single “Wasted Time,” from the upcoming LP Ripcord.
The new album, out May 6th, which features the Grammy-nominated “John Deere, John Cougar, John 3:16” and the chart-topping “Break on Me,” is already one the year’s most-anticipated releases. New release “Wasted Time” has a breezy, summertime vibe that’s punctuated by Urban’s fleet-fingered playing on the “ganjocaster,” the double-necked instrument that combines the sound of a banjo and electric guitar. Urban’s ganjocaster was designed and built by his friend and former band mate, Brian Nutter.
American Idol airs its three-part finale beginning Tuesday, April 5th, with a 90-minute retrospective, American Idol: American Dream. Carrie Underwood will sing live and Kelly Clarkson will be featured in a pre-recorded segment when the show’s last episodes crown the final champion. The shows air live at 8 p.m. ET, Wednesday and Thursday on FOX.
