Metallica unleashed their volatile new single "Moth Into Flame" Thursday on The Tonight Show. "Rise and fall/ Who cares at all," James Hetfield sang between harmonized guitar leads with Kirk Hammett. "Blacked out, pop queen/ Amphetamine, the screams crashed in the silence." Drummer Lars Ulrich set the frenzied pace with his shifting beats, and Hammett nailed his Hendrix-leaning wah-wah solo.

"Moth Into Flame" previews the metal legends' upcoming double-LP, Hardwired … to Self-Destruct, out November 18th. The deluxe version of the album, their first since 2008's Death Magnetic, will also include a bonus disc of live recordings and cover songs (including Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow" and Deep Purple's "When a Blind Man Cries").

Metallica released the "Moth Into Flame" video this week and debuted the track onstage during a recent fan club-only gig at New York's Webster Hall.

"Most of the songs are simpler," drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone of the new material. "We introduce a mood and we stick to it, rather than songs we've done where one riff happens and we go over here and then over there and becomes a journey through all these different soundscapes. The songs are more linear. … It cruises along a little bit more than the last record."
