Watch Paul Simon, Fred Armisen Invade NY Auto Show news

The powerhouse Saturday Night Live‘s season finale pushed a sketch starring Paul Simon and host Fred Armisen visiting the NY Auto Show to web exclusive status. Although the video short didn’t make it to broadcast, it still makes for must-see viewing as Simon appears at the annual car show – and on Saturday Night Live for that matter – for one blatant, tongue-in-cheek purpose: To promote his upcoming LP Stranger to Stranger.

When Armisen and Simon are riffing about all the purposes cars serve, the singer offers up that vehicles can be used to haul things, like “groceries and albums… albums. “Oh yes, let’s mention your album,” Armisen said.

“Well, I don’t want to look like I’m selling,” Simon said.

“Yes, but why did you want to do this video if you don’t want to look like you’re selling?,” Armisen asked.

“That’s a good point,” Simon responded.

Simon and Armisen also hosted a Q&A session with auto show goers where they were asked about the American availability of the Audi A3 hybrids as well as the first car they ever owned. “My first car was a used ’58 red Impala convertible with triple carburetors. Burned to the ground, unfortunately,” Simon said. “Caught fire while I was in it.”

As Simon and Armisen tour the luxurious interior of a $2 million red Koenigsegg Regera, the singer told the Portlandia star about the greatest name-drop he has ever heard. “First of all, I was having a conversation with the Dalai Lama… that’s not it,” Simon said. “The Dalai Lama said to me at one point, ‘You know, Mao Zedong once said to me…’ And I said, ‘That’s it man, you win.'”

Stranger to Stranger is out June 3rd.
