Watch the Grateful Dead Take Tennessee Jed Back to Massachusetts news

“Tennessee Jed” Sullivan Stadium, Foxboro, MA 7/2/89

The Grateful Dead carry a Massachusetts crowd of over 60,000 through a rousing rendition of “Tennessee Jed” in a special clip from a previously unreleased concert set to screen during the band’s sixth annual Meet-Up at the Movies event.

This year’s offering features the Dead’s July 2nd, 1989 concert at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Along with their delightful, harmony-laden performance of perennial sing-along “Tennessee Jed,” the Foxboro show also boasted a rare opening rendition of “Playing in the Band” and the only time the group started a second set with “Friend of the Devil.”

Other highlights from the show include two Bob Dylan covers (“Queen Jane Approximately” and “Quinn the Eskimo”) and a medley featuring Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” segueing into the Beatles’ “Hey Jude.” The Dead also closed with a classic run of songs: “Truckin'” to “He’s Gone” to “Eyes of the World.”

The screening will also include a special interview with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux about the upcoming 12-disc July 1978: The Complete Recordings box set, and previously unreleased footage from recent Dead and Company shows.

The sixth Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies will take place May 11th at 7 p.m. local time and is presented by Fathom Events and Rhino Entertainment. Tickets, as well as a list of participating movie theaters, are available on the event’s website.
