Former President George W. Bush attended a memorial service in Dallas for the five police officers killed by Micah Johnson last week. With President and First Lady Obama also on-hand for the somber occasion, cameras captured the former President in what seemed to be an oddly jovial mood, given his surroundings.
As a choir sings a solemn take on “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” with most of the attendees heads bowed respectfully, President Bush can be seen nodding his head and sporting a half-grin as he bops rhythmically. Michelle Obama is holding his hand, seemingly trying to avoid what is clearly an awkward moment.
The memorial is one of several that have occurred in the wake of the police shootings in Dallas, as well as the high-profile killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Beyonce offered a tribute to the slain officers, sharing her thoughts via Instagram.
“Rest in peace to the officers whose lives were senselessly taken yesterday in Dallas,” read her caption. “I am praying for a full recovery of the seven others injured. No violence will create peace. Every human life is valuable. We must be the solution. Every human being has the right to gather in peaceful protest without suffering more unnecessary violence.
To effect change we must show love in the face of hate and peace in the face of violence.”
At the Dallas memorial, President Obama spoke about anxiety and anger and how to push the nation through the current climate.
“I believe our sorrow can make us a better country. I believe our righteous anger can be transformed into more justice and more peace. Weeping may endure for a night but I’m convinced joy comes in the morning,” the President said.
Bush did share words on the tragedy.
“Those of us who love Dallas and call it home, have had five deaths in the family,” President Bush offered, along with his condolences to the officers’ loved ones.
