It seems like Yasiin Bey can’t get no love in S.A. On Tuesday (March 8), the artist formerly known as Mos Def was turned away in a South African court after refusing to remove a turban from his head.

Bey was in court to answer charges of using a world passport while traveling out of the country. The Department of Home Affairs doesn’t recognized the world passport and charged the rapper for using a false identity, and allegedly helping his family to stay illegally in South Africa.

According to News24.com, the 42-year-old activist arrived in court in a light blue turban and was denied entrance because he refused to remove his headwear.

Bey returned later with a loosely draped scarf wrapped over his head and shoulders, which allowed security to do a proper search of his body. Adding to the incident were the shutterbugs and journalists who were standing outside of the courthouse documenting his appearance.

Wearing dark sunglasses and a heather grey jacket, a bearded Bey looked unhappy as he entered the courthouse with his entourage. During the hearing, prosecutors requested a two-week postponement and scheduled another hearing for March 24. He will remain free on bail and could possibly stay in South Africa for now.

Bey, who announced that he’s retiring from rap, feels that he’s being mistreated by South African officials. “I haven’t broken any law. And I’m being treated like a criminal,” he said in a message via Kanye West’s official website.
